The Gauntlet: Rube Edition
Yes, yes, finally, I'm done, whatever. Blah. Here's this week's gauntlet with Gopher Uber-Rube (that's an anagram!) Brenthoven.
RWD: So, I hear the Gophers are BACK!!!!!!!!! [This was Brent’s status after the Gophers swept UMass. They’re 3-6-3. Quite the, um, formidable opponent.]
Brent Hoven: They're lurking, waiting to pounce.
RWD: No, I heard they were BACK!!!!!! You said so yourself. [There’s no turning back! Once it’s on Facebook, it’s forever!]
BH: That night they were. They slaughtered their prey. Now they wait... possibly in a couple days' time they will pounce again.
RWD: Maybe if they're allowed to ride scooters. [Yeah Budish!]
BH: Only if they are on their way to a doctor's appt for mono. [Holla Bjugstad!]
RWD: They should stop kissing each other. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but they're spreading germs. [Really, guys, save it for the off-season.]
BH: We're just too in love with ourselves. We have no equal. [We?]
RWD: I think Sacred Heart might be your equal.
BH: Stop messing around. They don't even have a team. [They do, barely.]
RWD: Well, then, Holy Cross.
BH: Alms for the poor, that is what that was. Kind of fitting, given the school and all.
RWD: I'm sure that is how you felt. [The Gophers have been very charitable of late, then.]
BH: Actually, I felt nothing. I fell into a deep coma, and woke up the next season. It was rather serene.
RWD: Did you feel that way last Saturday night? [When the Gophers were swept by Mankato State!]
BH: Close. The infamous Mankato Meltdown scale was talked about, but it never really topped 3. [Is it on a scale of 0-3? Brent thinks people know about these things he makes up, but really only the voices in his head know.]
RWD: Did you go to the games? [Rhetorical question.]
BH: I choose to spend my money wisely. I choose to not rub elbows with the corpies. It's a terrible thing happening to Mariucci [we’re talking about Mankato, right?], and other schools are now also falling into that trap. tDECC will soon succumb with their snappy new arena, too. Just watch.
RWD: Oh, yeah, that Mankato Civic Center. So corporate. [I asked if he went to the games last weekend! Not any games ever! Although the answer is still no.]
BH: Mankato is another school where I'm surprised they still have a team. And you're saying tDogs are the same as Mankato? [This is like talking to Biddco. Or a brick wall.]
RWD: No. [Good gravy, he is not smart.] I'm saying I asked you if you went to the games, you started whining about corporate sell-outs, and I pointed out THE GAME WAS IN MANKATO.
BH: So? I seguewayed [A chill went down my spine at this horrible spelling error] a bit.
RWD: Segued.
BH: Fine, Little Miss Journalism.
RWD: That's Ms.
BH: Ok Gloria Steinem. [Is that supposed to be an insult? It’s not!]
RWD: I don't understand why you wouldn't want to attend hockey games. You could still go, with a bag over your head. [Sort of Charlie Brown-like. They’re both bald!]
BH: That would be showing shame. That is unacceptable. I'm not a Techie.
RWD: Brent, it's pride comes before a fall, not after.
BH: Pride is always there. It's how you view it, and display it. [Hm, yes, the Gophers displayed a lot of pride losing to… oh, everyone.]
RWD: Okay then. Does MNS also have pride in the Gophers?
BH: MNS needs to come out of the closet and admit he's a Gopher fan first. [Two separate events?]
RWD: Very true. Why someone would travel to Houghton to see the Gophers play when their alleged own team is clinching the MacNaughton is beyond comprehension.
BH: It is. I think he was after one of the legendary Tech 5s.
RWD: Tech 5s?
BH: The Scale of Hotness (for females) is adjusted for the MTU student body. For example, if a female from MN is rated a "3" here, she would rate a "5" at MTU. This is due to the lack of females at the school. [Oh. Another stupid scale that no one but Brent knows about.]
RWD: Okay. So it was even more of a delusional trip than I originally thought! [Like MNS could get a “Tech 5.” Or a “Tech 1.” Or even a “Tech –i”]
BH: It's the UP. It's like one big bad acid trip. [I would never describe it that way. This is an acid trip.]
RWD: I see. Well, enough about MNS. Geist is your best friend. Does that make you want to commit suicide?
BH: He makes me feel good about being me. Not only is he a lowly Sioux fan, but he's a loud obnoxious faux-violent [He is faux-violent! He's always talking about hammer-punching people but has never actually thrown a hammer-punch.] man. I'm an angel compared to him. [The Angel of Death, perhaps.]
RWD: Aha, I see. How Mean Girl of you.
BH: Interesting viewpoint on your part.
RWD: Why do you call yourself the Rube?
BH: It was a fitting name bestowed upon me by my friends. It just kind of caught on, like most other nicknames. So I ran with it. [This is a terrible, failing explanation.]
RWD: Why do you refer to yourself in the third person when you tag yourself in Facebook photos? [He always says things like "The Rube and friends." Well, he doesn't have any friends, that was just an example.]
BH: I thought we covered this. I'm a Gopher fan, and therefore arrogant.
RWD: Like Roman Augustovitz. [Chuck's pet peeve is Roman's habit of tweeting and referring to himself as "Eye." Maybe he just doesn't know how to spell "I."]
BH: Or Herschel Walker.
RWD: We're talking about hockey here. Are you going to the games this weekend? [Rhetorical question.]
BH: I am not. I can never make the Fri games on time, and on Sat I will be celebrating a friend's birthday (although I will be watching). [He has more excuses than Don Lucia.]
RWD: You can't make the Friday game? Is that because you are a forklift jockey?
BH: That would be correct. I refuse to be the jackbag who shows up in the middle of the second period to take my seat.
RWD: You wouldn't have a seat.
BH: If I had a ticket, I'd have a seat somewhere.
RWD: Forklift jockeys can only have standing room only.
BH: That's odd. I've never had SRO. I think someone could sell you a bridge in SF [Sioux Falls?] with your thinking. [They don't take checks, Brent.] Or a tUMD National Title.
RWD: Why would I buy one when we're mere months from coming by one honestly?
BH: Ah, the hope of youth. So eternal, so foolish.
RWD: Better than being old and a top candidate for the Bosley Hair Restoration System.
BH: Depends on who you ask.
RWD: No. It doesn't.
BH: Sure it does. If you're asking me, I'm proud of myself. If you ask someone else, that answer will differ. They probably wouldn't be proud of me. So it does indeed depend on who you ask.
RWD: Good lord. Is this an after school special?
BH: Only if we can get some gold stars.
RWD: Are you going to drink Kangas Kool-Aid or Patterson Punch this weekend?
BH: I think I'm gonna switch it up. KK one night, and PP on the other.
RWD: PP, huh? [Well, it is sterile. Like Brent, we can only hope.]
BH: The PP, yes. Something that both teams have trouble with. tUMD can't stop one from what I hear, [only late in games] and MN has been in a slump with theirs.
RWD: I wouldn't worry. We get shorthanded goals.
BH: And love OT.
RWD: We get it done in regulation, too.
BH: As seen by your record, sure.
RWD: You really cheer for some terrible teams. I mean, besides the Gophers, there's the Devils and the Bills. Do you have a mental illness?
BH: Well, the Devils are in a bad way right now, but it's hard to argue they haven't been successful in the last 15 years (3 titles). The Bills? They're just the Vikings with less mob mentality fans. [This is a reason to cheer for a team?]
RWD: Why would anyone choose to be a Bills fan? Are you also a fan of the LA Clippers?
BH: A. Grew up watching the great Jim Kelly strive and survive. Hard-working Irishman. And there were others there that I admired for their dedication and heart. B. Bouncyball is terrible. The team game is pretty much gone. When the Celtic's Big Three (+ One) retired, I was done with the sport.
RWD: I see. If you like players with dedication and heart, why would you watch Gopher hockey?
BH: They have heart. Sometimes you may not see it, but they have it. There are always a few bad apples on every team, sure, but you have to look at the big picture.
RWD: Oh, that's even better. Players that have heart but choose not to use it. Better make John Hill the head coach.
BH: Nice spin, Doc. Sometimes a fan sees the tree, and not the forest. [What are you, Mr. Miyagi? A tree? Well, I'd call Helgeson a traffic cone, but ok, we'll go with tree.] Sometimes a player who seems to not have heart, is just being bested by superior player. And fire Hill.
RWD: There will be much besting of the Gophers by superior players this weekend.
BH: I thought tUMD was in Duluth, and not that dirty town to the east?
RWD: Lowercase "s."
BH: Figured you typo'd. [Never!]
RWD: No. Who are your favorite players on this Gopher, um, "team?"
BH: I like Cepis a lot, even though he's been quiet lately. Obviously a big fan of Kangas Khan and St. Pat. I do have high hopes for Serratore, he's shown some sparks.
RWD: The name Cepis is so gross. It sounds like a disease.
BH: Then refer to him as Cap'n Chirp.
RWD: [This gets confusion because I read it as "they" not "then."] No they don't, it's Papa Chirp, which is so stupid. They should call him the Dive Captain. [Like a submarine. Because their ship is going down!]
BH: I didn't say they referred to him as Cap'n Chirp. I say you should refer to him as such. [Okay, Such.] And I have to admit he embellishes. He's no Robbie Earl though. [Because Robbie Earl at least had a future in professional hockey.] Not even close. He's not a big guy. Doesn't take much to knock him down. [Oh, he's a gigantic wimp.]
RWD: I thought it was a typo.
BH: No.
RWD: I see. I will refer to him as Sepsis. Or Septic Tank. Or Seepage.
BH: You can go right ahead. [I don't need your permission, Brent.]
RWD: Or also "That kid who just got flattened by Dan DeLisle/Dylan Olsen/Brady Lamb/Mike Connolly/his own teammates/me."
BH: Olsen only valid on what, Sat?
RWD: Friday.
BH: Ok, knew it was only one day.
RWD: Why would it be Saturday only? That makes no sense.
BH: I have no idea. Why is it only one night to begin with?
RWD: We aren't the Hostile and Abusives. He didn't throw a lawn mower or get a DUI. He is going to the Team Canada tryouts.
BH: Ah. I usually don't delve into the series at hand until Wed night at the very earliest. Usually it's Thu night. [Apparently Brent doesn't have the time to type out whole days.]
RWD: Well the WJCs are a big deal.
BH: Yep. It tires the Gophers out every year. That's a lot of games and travel added to the schedule.
RWD: Hm, funny. It only tires the Gophers out.
BH: It's darn tough to be this good. It wears one down.
RWD: No worries this year. You'll have, what, one guy gone? Haula?
BH: Sure? I don't worry about it too much. Nothing one can do about it, so I just sit back and see what happens.
RWD: No one else is good enough. [Bjugstad will not make it.]
BH: According to the stats, anyways.
RWD: According to the stats, the scouts, the coaches, the media, the public... Who are some of your all-time favorite Gophers?
BH: Tony Lucia was great. Not a stat guy, he wasn't that good, but he hustled every friggin' play. Never quit. I liked to watch Vanek play, he was a true skill guy, and for some reason, I liked DeMarchi. Hard-nosed guy.
RWD: Tony. Lucia. [I don't even know what to say.]
BH: I had my doubts, too, being Coach's boy and all. He worked. He worked hard.
RWD: He's probably a forklift driver now too.
BH: We could use people like him.
RWD: No one works hard at your work?
BH: There are some that don't. [Like Brent.] I'll leave it at that. [Yeah, you don't want word to get around that you're a slacker.] I would think it's pretty common no matter where you go.
RWD: I see. Or maybe just wherever you work.
BH: It's not Phillips neighborhood, that's for sure. [Blah. Never mind on that.]
RWD: Indeed. So, who's the hottest Gopher?
BH: Me. Oh, Gopher player? I don't have an opinion on that. You should ask a colleague of mine, known as Dancing Girl.
RWD: No. I'm asking you.
BH: Then I don't have an opinion. Although Cepis looks like Spicoli (I believe LaPanta noticed that one; it might have been Chorske).
RWD: Cepis looks like someone drove a forklift over his face.
BH: It wasn't me. I'm a great driver.
RWD: Yeah right. You're the "what not to do" guy in the safety videos.
BH: I wish I was. That looks like fun.
RWD: Anyway, who is the hottest Gopher? [Brick wall!]
BH: I have no opinion. You don't read too well, do you? Must be that tUMD edumacation.
RWD: I went to Illinois and Augsburg, genius.
BH: Well, it'd be nice to know that. And that's even worse. Augsburg is supposed to be a good school. For shame.
RWD: It's on Facebook, ass. Unlike you, I don't PRETEND TO BE SOMEONE ELSE. [Brent Hoven is not his real name!]
BH: I don't care enough to know every detail about you. And outside of work, everyone calls me by my "name." Even family.
RWD: Weird. Probably because your family likes to pretend you're not really related. [Ah yes, that makes sense.]
BH: Or they want to be part of something great. [What?]
RWD: Like tUMD's season this year. [Yes!]
BH: They'll fail. Like every other run. But I bet they get that Hobey again! Woohoo! [There isn't a Gopher player even sniffing a Hobey Baker and we've got three legit contenders.]
RWD: So who will be the Gopher coaches next year? Other than Hill as head coach.
BH: My miracle wish list would be one of the Serratores. [Well, you've already got one. Player-coach?] Blais is NOT going to be here, I don't care about the urban legends concerning the secret contract clause. I'd like to see MN go all out and get Blasi. [That's Enrico Blasi, aka Mr. Bean, not a typo.] If not, then Jeff Johnson [Possible forklift jockey?], but he's going nowhere. After that? There's some rumors I've come across, but nothing to take heed over as of right now.
RWD: Jeff Johnson?
BH: Jackson, sorry. Mistype. Trying to multi-task.
RWD: Well, since you're too good for this blog, why don't you wrap it up with a few thoughts. How will the Gophers win this weekend?
BH: I enjoy the candor in The Gauntlet. It's not stuffy. [This is Goonesque.] And the Gophers will win by scoring more goals than tUMD in the game, silly. However futile, good luck to tDogs, and Ski-U-Mah! Thanks for selecting me for your sacrificial lamb.
RWD: Blah, that's not the answer. I was looking for, you know, strategery.
BH: Uh, we'll give 110% [No], take what they give us [Yes], hit hard on the forecheck [No], block some shots when they become aggressive [No]. We can't let our goalie hang out to dry [You will]. They're a good team, and they'll bring everything they've got. We'll just have to take it a shift at a time, and leave it all on the ice [Translation: Gophers will pee themselves in fear.]
RWD: And how will they lose?
BH: By not doing those things I mentioned.
RWD: Did Maturi hire Jerry Kill as a coach or as a mascot?
BH: Hired him as a sideshow. It's MN Football. I don't care.
RWD: He looks a lot like Goldy.
BH: He looks like a child molester.
RWD: So does Goldy.
BH: That would be Bucky Beaver from BSU. A cross between Bucky Badger and Goldy. He's hideous.
RWD: I did see him when I was at their sad little rink in October.
BH: You saw the old one? Yeah, it's bad.
RWD: No, I meant the new one.
BH: Robbinsdale Cooper had a better arena! [The bagel throwers!] Oh, the new one. Better or worse than say, NMU or MTU? Or is it better than NCC (personal hatred aside)?
RWD: Never been to the Berry. [Bah! I'm letting him derail me!]
BH: Berry is a pole barn. With ice. No rise to the seats. Terrible.
RWD: This conversation is irrelevant. Give a score prediction and get this thing over with.
BH: Hm... 3-2 MN OT Fri. [Since he didn't say which campus, I'll assume he meant Duluth.] 5-3 MN Sat. [Again, assume he meant Duluth.] Wait, make that 5-4 MN Sat. [No.]
RWD: Enjoy seeing your dreams crushed. Got an F hockey text all worked out? [Inside joke. Lots of naughty words used.]
BH: I expect to be dancing on my coffee table. [Gross.] And the F Hockey texts just come naturally. You can't force them.
RWD: The Gophers will make sure of it.

Wireless
tUMD 4, Tech 2
Four people asked me when I was going to post. FOUR. Amazing. Anyway, I'm sorry. I did want to post this weekend but the Interwebs at my hotel (The Suites at Waterfront Plaza) had the worst wireless internet connection ever. All I had for internets was my BlackBerry and I can't really post on here.
Okay, folks, let's see if Grandma can remember the weekend.
Friday I went to the Coaches'? Coach's? Which one is it? Show at BWW. I don't like it there as much as I did at the Sports Garden because it is really hard to hear the show. That's fine because there was plenty to discuss with my gals. I wanted to win a Bulldog football jersey but this old guy decided to steal it. At first it seemed like a joke but then it became clear that this klepto wasn't going to let it go. So my friend Kris had to use her feminine wiles to get the jersey back to the table where it belonged. Bruce made me answer a trivia question. You know, it was not that long ago that Bruce was, oh, a bit recalcitrant to allow me on the radio. Now he's practically begging me for it! He asked me who scored the GWG in the 2009 Final Five championship game. The answer is MacGregor Sharp. I got it right although at the time I was guessing because I was very nervous. Sandy and Justin may were like totally right there watching! So I won a jersey thanks to Schmidt's mom and my own amazing brain!
The game on Friday started very poorly. tUMD was down 2-0 until just before the end of the 2nd period when Justin Fontaine hooked us up with a goal! Hooray! In the third period, tUMD got a penalty. Fontaine was on the PK and he was taking the puck into the attacking zone and got tangled up with a Tech defender. He shoved the puck toward the net and Tech's goalie, Robinson, came out to play it. The puck went through his five-hole and into the net. Glorious! MCON and Brett Olson went to the penalty box together and MCON stood there and yelled at him for like 5 minutes before play resume. Then My Jacky got a goal, finally getting himself off the naughty list, Joe Basaraba got his first goal as a Bulldog, Justin Faulk let fly a shot that rang off the pipe, shot up into the air and flew practically all the way to the blue line, and then Dan Delisle got this crazy bouncy goal. The only black mark on that period was the final goal, which came right as tUMD students were chanting "This game's over." Oopy. Oh, also, at some point JT Brown did a cannonball right into Tech's goalie.
Saturday it snowed a lot. I took some pictures. They will be uploaded sometime in 2015. Unless we all die in 2012.
MCON started the scoring off right away in the second game, although Tech answered back quickly. A Tech player got a contact to the head major penalty and was ejected from the game, and tUMD scored early in the 2nd period during that major. Tech scored again, on a play where Kenny tried to dive on the puck and missed and it went under him and into the net. These things occur. A scrum caused tUMD to get a 5 on 3 as Tech's entire team decided to go after Mike Seidel. He is so badass though and they failed. Justin Faulk got a goal and Eric Kattelus went totally apepoopy and cross-checked Mike, then hit him in the head, then skated toward the bench and had to be dragged away by the referees. It was not his best choice. Then tUMD had another 5 on 3 and Justin Faulk scored another goal. It was the exact same play! Lovely. No one else scored and my little Benny the Elf was kicked out of the game with about a minute left.
MEg and Shirtless guy were part of the on-ice entertainment during intermission. They tried valiantly but could not overcome Champ's "assistance" to the other team. Walt, the Zamboni Dude, recklessly drove the zam around the ice for his final resurfacing. It was totally awesome. Also, total fail on tUMD's part for not putting Walt in the middle of their stick salute.
Sorry this post came so late, but another one is coming soon! It's already half-written. And allegedly a Gauntlet.

Shiver Me Timbers!
Driving back from Houghton with MEg monstrously hungover on an hour of sleep
Driving up to Duluth with FHG and Kleiner and hitting unexpected swirling snow and annoying traffic
Driving home from Duluth with MEg in a whiteout
Anyway, I picked my seats today. I waited for probably 20 minutes for my turn in this little lobby right by the Champions Club thingy. It was kind of lonely because everyone else there seemed super grouchy. One guy was really mad about how low he was on the priority list. Sir, perhaps this was something that could have been remedied months ago when you got your selection date, when it wasn't necessary to invent a time machine in order for you to be made whole. I bet your head would have exploded if I had mentioned this was my second year as a season ticket holder and we were picking at the same time! Great Scott!!! 1.21 Jigowatts!!!
I had my first and only foray into the Champions Club to get a hard hat, and then a person named Butch was assigned as my personal guide. He asked if there was anywhere specific I wanted to go, like the ends or the sides. I said "Between the ends and the sides?" Because I am an idiot. I showed him more specifically where I wanted and away we went. I got seats pretty much where I wanted (Section 216, Row 8, Seats 20 and 21) and I hope Biddco can pick right next to me on Thursday. Sorry to everyone who is in my vicinity.
Here is a view from my seats:
You can totally imagine this as a game. Look, that large blue crane thing is Dan DeLisle. And then those two things right on the point are like Montgomery and Olsen, and then the cones are the opponents.
Ciskie roped me into coming down to some sort of radio promotion thing, and then ambushed me by trying to force me to discuss the Vikings AND did not allow me to use my alias, Penelope von Streuselbottom. I refused, so then he got me to talk about the new arena and I said I took the last two good seats, which was not what I was supposed to say. I am sorry, I did not get the script in advance. If you were listening, I am also sorry. I hope you were not, because it is 45 seconds of your life that I have ruined, in addition to any time you spent on RWD.
Lots of stuff coming this week!! So, more time to waste on here!

Six of One
Tickets to the game? Er, I don't remember what it breaks down to per game.
Gas? I think about $30.
Junk food at the convenience store? $10 or so.
Mini hockey road trip with my best friend? Priceless.
What a glorious game. Other than MEg wearing a Seawolves jersey for most of the game. And also I almost killed us (well, not Bethlyn, I think I would have taken the brunt of the crash) turning onto Harbor Drive, but we lived. Obviously.
Travis Oleksuk scored in the first minute of the game. I was ecstatic. Partially because it was an excellent goal, partially because we scored first in a game, which we never seem to do. That was the only goal of the first period but there were numerous chances.
In the second period Fonz got a PPG that I didn't really see as it was at the other end, and then Dan DeLisle had a beauty of a goal for his first as a Bulldog. The last time tUMD faced the Seawolves at tDECC was the last regular season game two years ago and they sucked; Dan DeLisle was at that game. I was sitting with Bruce and pointed him out (I'm not that creepy, it was easy to deduce the 7'6" guy in the Totino-Grace jacket was DeLisle) and we were both blown away by his gigantism. And both horrified that a recruit had to see that crappiness. Thank you, Dan, for seeing how you could rectify the situation.
In the third period, an excellent goal by Kyle Schmidt opened the scoring in the period, and then Mike Seidel took one of those new mandatory-major penalties. I feel like in a few years a too-many-men-on-the-ice penalty is going to be a mandatory forfeit. I was nervous, mostly because of the shutout. Travis Oleksuk was like "No, RWD, I got this," and after about 2 minutes of killing (which went by quickly! Usually I feel like even 10 seconds takes FOREVER) he had a nifty breakaway for a shorthanded goal. It looked originally like Kamal had made the save but then the puck trickled through his legs and into the net.
Jacky and Curtis Leinweber, in the ultimate "Pick on someone your own size" battle, got matching minors for cross checking and were awarded for their efforts with a 2-minute coffee break. They seemed to be having a scintillating conversation, probably about the new DECC, because at one point Jack gestured to the scoreboard. He must have been saying "In AMSoil arena, we'll have instant replay." Curtis seemed opposed.
Dan DeLisle scored with 4 seconds left, strangely. He just sort of stuffed the puck into the net. Half the arena was already gone and did not witness what can only be the start of a massive scoring streak for Mr. DeLisle.

The Thrill of Victory
Ah yes, the hockey game. Sorry, I'm busy watching a travesty of a football game.
Saturday was an interesting day. I was very nervous all day. MEg, Biddco and I went to Carlton to watch Ciskie's kid in his goaltending debut. He did a good job, considering he had not even played in practice. He just needs to work on not looking over to the sidelines to see if we saw his save. Especially when the rebound is lying in the crease. I think that happened to Brad Eidsness on our Oleksuk goal; he was looking at his mommy. Although if his mommy was in the stands she probably wasn't very happy with the things said about her.
We busted out the banana last night. The banana, I should mention, is 2-0. We also debuted Sieve-mas carols, which are not new (Michigan Tech does them), but new to us! No one threw up behind us, or in front of us, or near us. We had a few signs, including Ron His Horse Is Thunder for Hobey. In case you did not understand the sign, Mr. His Horse Is Thunder was until recently the tribal leader of the Standing Rock Lakota, and is a key opponent of the Sioux nickname. And nothing gets the undies of Sioux fans in a bunch faster than he does, now that Myles Brand is dead. If that sign made even one UND fan angry, my mission was accomplished. (In response to the dismay from one of my Twitter followers at my usage of "Nazi", I'm sorry you were disappointed I am not classy, but I don't think I've ever tried to uphold any standard of class.)
Please note, opposing fans: Connolly-Connolly-Fontaine is not a line. And when you said "I bet we won't see Reiter in net on Saturday," it's not an astute observation. We have what's called a goalie rotation.
Ah yes, the game. I have turned off the football one.
The pre-game did not go so well, as a DECC security, um, "woman" told us we could have signs but not hang them over the railing. Nor could we hang it at the top of the section, where we hang signs oh, pretty much EVERY OTHER GAME. And then ANOTHER person came over to tell me I could not have a Sioux Play Like Pioux sign. However, that sign lived to fight another day, which was awesome! And then ANOTHER cop told us to stay off the railing, and that there was a ZERO TOLERANCE policy because we had too many people in the row. Which we did. But he also kept letting people go by us when the puck was in play! I'm always trying to help people improve themselves, so I loudly stated "PUCK IS IN PLAY!"
The first period was unpleasant. I was very unhappy. The second period began much in the same way, and I made some very angry tweets. And may have loudly stated my displeasure. Which can carry in a nearly silent arena.
The third period was awesome, of course. Kyle Schmidt (how about this guy? Our juniors are stepping it up! Kyle is as stealthy as a ninja!) broke the shutout. I feel like MEg, Biddco and I should get the 3rd, 4th, and 5th assists because we were raining a torrent of SHUTOUT heckles at him as the puck went in. You are welcome, Kyle.
Ben Blood took a penalty and the power play was just what tUMD needed... although we hadn't been particularly successful. (Something that has been frustrating fans, and which I agree. Denver puts Big Joe Colborne in the crease. We can put Big Danny Delisle there, as someone on Pates' blog suggested.) Until Bordo took a penalty to negate that. But then Farmer MacWilliam took a penalty as well! Excellent.
As far as Safetynetgate, I didn't see it. I mean, really, I have enough trouble following the puck ON the ice let alone when it deflects and flies through the air. Whatever. tUMD was the beneficiary of a blown call, and that's that. Don't quit til you hear the whistle.
So some stuff happened and the puck was on net and then I saw it lying there and I was FREAKING OUT because how many times in the series did crazy stuff happen where tUMD could just not drop the hammer? and then the puck was in the net, and I was hugging MEg and screaming and then we ran and hugged the cop (the guy, not the, um, "woman") and freaked out.
And then the game went into overtime and I honestly could not tell you what happened because I suck at watching games analytically. I'm unable to dispassionately watch a hockey game, and thus I was unable to even tell who was on the ice, just that the puck was in the net, and I was in the midst of a pile of about 50 people. Glorious! I know I'm too old to sit with the students, but really, I can't enjoy an overtime win as much sitting alone in my regular seats.
Damn, do I ever love hockey.

The Wild Rumpus
FIRST PLACE BULLDOGS!!! 3, Ultimate Gladiators 2
Ok, this is going to be a very short post. Because look at the time stamp! OMG!
Not the best game tUMD has ever played. Not the worst. But I love, love, LOVE that they found a way to win it. They were down 2-0 in the first period, but they battled. And it WAS a battle. Just as Justin Fontaine. The Mavs were trying to kill him, I think.
Tomorrow = fun post. I promise.

Last Night
Yesterday was pretty much insane.
MEg and I headed up to Duluth at about noon after packing the PBHjT shirts that hadn't gone up to Duluth with Biddco last weekend. The ride up was nice, though the fall colors haven't peaked yet. Next weekend, maybe?
I FINALLY got my season tickets, though the only reason I did was because I went to the UMD ticket office to pick them up. I'm a season ticket holder, finally! W00t w00t!
In the final hours of our planning, we went over the cheer a few more times, packed up the shirts into fifteen grocery bags, made a sign for the shirts, and then loaded everything into Linnea's vehicle and headed down to the dreaded Little Angie's.
Biddco put on the banana suit in the DECC parking lot and the five of us hauled the bags inside, where I was to confront my worst fears. I had been in a state of inner panic for the last few hours wondering if the shirts were going to be confiscated. But then the first thing that happened as we walked in was the cop at the door bought a shirt, and we were in.
Once we got set up and students started trickling in, my amazing and fabulous friends went to work to pimp out the shirts any way they could. I have to take a moment to thank them: Zach, Lindsey, Linnea, Richie, Reign, Donna (not me), Adam, and of course MeanEgirl and Biddco. The PBHjT shirts were VERY popular, especially since we had an actual banana.
tUMD decided to raise the Final Five banner yesterday before the game, which was dumb because 1. people don't usually arrive too early on Fridays and 2. we did it against a non-conference opponent and they weren't even on the ice. They should have waited until next weekend and done it in front of Mankato State to rub their faces in it. I thought that was the point of a banner raising. Oh yeah, and also to applaud our team. The BEST part about it was the return of Matt Greer! They should have done it at intermission so more people would be there to applaud him!
The only part of PBHjT that was unsuccessful was doing the actual Peanut Butter Hjelle Time cheer. I'm not really sure why people were so averse to it. I mean, these are the same people who sang "The Wheels On Your House" against Denver. Since when did they get so picky about what cheers they would and would not do?
Justin Fontaine got things going in the first period about 9 minutes in, set up by My Sweet Jacky and Drew Akins. Drew on the power play spells good things for Team Cougar in WCHA fantasy hockey. On the next power play, Fonzie got another totally sick goal on an incredibly sweet setup from My Jacky and also Dylan Olsen, who is the first freshman to get a point! tUMD was rolling until some ill-timed penalties led to LSSU's first goal. LSSU scored with an extra attacker while already on the power play, which at first seemed very unfortunate, but actually just set up My Jacky to get a shorthanded goal! That was very exciting! And of course it was set up by Arthur Fonzarelli and a fresh from the penalty box Scott Kishel.
And thus ended the first period.
Obviously the reason they did the banner raising pre-game was because it was ALSO parents' weekend, and they brought out all the parents on the all-purpose red carpet. Some of us started a "Thank you parents" chant but it didn't last nearly long enough. Don't forget, folks, that our beloved Bulldogs are here thanks to the time, money, love, support, and superior genetics of their parents.
The second period was exciting only because former My Guy Rob Bordson got a goal!!! Fantastic for him. The last time Bordo had a goal was on my birthday in 2007. Getting out from under the burden of being My Guy probably helped him, as I know it's a lot of pressure.
The third period felt pretty flat, and the fans kind of slacked. I blame this on all the normal agitators who went to the Curling Club and didn't return until 5 minutes into the period. I know it's "cool" to try to see how much hockey you can miss in the CC, but the students need their leaders in the section! Lake Superior State brought the deficit within one, which made the game needlessly tense, but Hjelle was up to the task and protected the lead. Dan Delisle laid out a monster hit on a Laker player that registered a 5 on the Richter Scale.
All that is left is to take care of a demoralized Northern Michigan and we will continue our dominance in the Showcase Showdown!
On a side note, a group of us waited for Brady after the game to congratulate him (I know! So unlike me! Normally I would be as far away from the team as possible!!) and to put a face to the banana, which he thought was really funny. He is an incredibly nice guy and we had a nice conversation which mostly revolved around how Michigan Tech sucks.
I will not be at the game on Sunday as it's too much of a stretch to make it up there in time, but t-shirts will STILL be available in case you were unable to pick yours up last night.
Bulldog hockey is back. HALLELUJAH!

Goal Oriented
A few times when I was in school my teachers would have me write down my goals for the year at the start of the semester. When I was in elementary school it was suck up things like "Get everything right on my tests." I succeeded. In junior high they were more sarcastic like "Don't be stupid" or "get a boyfriend." Again, success. In high school when I took the PSATs I wrote on my answer booklet (which I would get back after I got the results of my test a few months later) "If you don't get National Merit honors, you might as well kill yourself." And I'm alive, so, again, success!
I'm good at setting goals, as you can see. So, AS ALWAYS, I'm here to help tUMD players set some achievable goals for the season! Let's go!
Drew Akins
Take only good penalties. I know you can't resist, but please, either 1. prevent goals or 2. emasculate opponents when you take penalties. Make them useful!
Chase Ryan
Play in some games! Maybe just a couple. I would totally cheer so hard for you. Biddco would be overcome with glee.
Travis Oleksuk
Get a goal EARLY. I mean, I know you're going to score a goal this season, many goals in fact, but get one the first game and get it over with. Then destroy all opponents.
Brady Hjelle
Make PBHjT a HUGE success by getting a shutout, or at the very LEAST, a win. No more of this tying LSSU to start the season. I WANT A WIN.
Jordan Fulton
Do what MacGregor Sharp did last year. You're talented. You're going to be on a great line, I'm pretty sure. And this is what's known as a "contract year." So have on. Beersong thinks you will.
Rob Bordson
End your exceptionally long pointless streak. And try not to look so sulky all the time.
Brady Lamb
Shoot the puck so hard it goes through the back of the net. Like Mike Eaves thought Tom Gorowsky did when Stalock fell down in that UW game. But Goro had just missed.
Mighty Midgets (Jacky, MCON, Wade Bergman, Huttel)
Play (as you three veterans always do) like you're 10 feet tall and bullet proof. Jordan Baker told me it was great to be short. And he's shorter than all of you!
Dan Delisle
Check someone so hard they fall into their own bench.
The rest of you? Uhhh... just do your best. Or even better. If you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything*.
*That's good advice, Marty.

...And The Rest
Et là, nous avons notre classe de repechage de 2009.
Round 1, Dylan Olsen, to the Chicago Blackhawks.
Round 3, Dan Delisle, to the Chicago Blackhawks.
Round 7, Max Tardy, to the St. Louis Blues.
Am I going to have to be a Blackhawks fan now? Seriously? This is upsetting.
Est-ce que je devrai être un fanatique de Blackhawks maintenant? Sérieusement? C'est bouleversant.
I am excited to see Dan taken so high. I'm not very good at judging prospects because I don't care, try, or know very much, so I rely on others to figure out how guys will shape up. Chicago must see a lot of promise in Dan, or they wouldn't have taken him in the third round. The big guys always have a tougher adjustment period in the WCHA, but I'm confident that once he adjusts to the wild inconsistencies in the refereeing in the conference, he'll be a force in front of the net. Just try to knock him out of the way.
I've been so focused on this year's class because they're almost here (98 days!!!!) that I forgot about our exciting class of 2010! Max Tardy was one of the last picks in the draft, and I'd completely forgotten that he was ranked so highly (among North American skaters). I know it's kind of weird to be drafted in the late rounds, but I hope Max is super excited. I'm excited for a Greyhound to be drafted (DHG will die) and I'm also now 100% on the Max Tardy bandwagon as we have the same birthday!
In other Dylan Olsen news, the Blackhawks had 5 draft picks in college. I feel much more secure in his future with UMD than, say, CC fans have to be feeling about John Moore.
Congratulations to all 211 young men who were selected in the 2009 draft. You're living the dream now, babies!
Félicitations à chacun des 211 jeunes hommes qui ont été choisis dans le repechage 2009. Vous vivez le rêve maintenant, bébés!

What Dreams May Come
First of all, this has nothing to do with the post forthcoming, but holy crap, I am a genius. I forgot that I had written this in February:
In three weeks, when the dust has settled, I don't want to be picking through the wreckage of a season that could have been, eating crow for writing posts like this. Please, please, please, throw your girl a bone here (triple entendre, anyone?) and give me, along with the city of Duluth and the worldwide Bulldog nation, something positive to take away from this season other than "It's equal to or slightly better than last year." I know you guys have it in you; seniors, you know what it was like to be on a team heading nowhere at an all-out run and then turn it into a playoff upset and a Final Five appearance. This year's team is going somewhere at a trot or possibly a canter, and I would like to see something fun. A couple of wins at the X. A couple of wins at Mariucci in February... and then a couple more in March. I don't know. Get creative. Okay? Thanks.
Wow, damn, do I love these guys even more. Begging works! Unless you're trying to get someone to take you back.
Let's talk about the impending season of doom. I think about Bulldog hockey probably more often than is healthy in the off-season (partially because my co-workers discovered RWD and enjoy making fun of my zealotry) and the other night I was dreaming about it. Specifically about Brady Hjelle. Don't worry, sweetie, you were clothed. Anyway, I was dreaming about a game and somehow Brady kept making these UNBELIEVABLE saves. That is really the extent of the dream that I remember, although I am fairly certain this is not a dream, but a premonition.
WHAT EXCITES ME
+Mikey Seidel bringing his unique brand of mischievous hockey to tUMD.
+RWD correspondents from all over attending games (ahem, Tracy and Dawn).
+SSPW, part III.
+This year's sophomore class.
+Another set of players who have the same last name (though different spellings), play the same position, and I hope will have similar numbers.
+PEANUT BUTTER HJELLE TIME.
+David Grun keeping #27 and getting his first collegiate goal on Oct 27th when I turn 27.
+Fonzie having a monster year.
+Playing at Tech for Winter Carnival!
+Road trippin'! Mankato, St. Cloud, Houghton, and of course Duluth.
+Rohlik didn't go to UNO.
WHAT SCARES ME
-Trying to make it through this season with 1. good grades 2. my job and 3. many games attended.
-Whether we'll have enough experience on the blue line.
-80s mall bangs (in general).
-The DU Pioneers.
-Not finishing in the top 5 in the WCHA (again) and not making the Final Five.
-Special teams.
-Drinking way too much on the Drunk Hockey Walk.
-Trying to pick who My Guys will be.
-Dan Delisle panning out as well as Mike Curry.
WHAT I WILL MISS
~Bruce on the airwaves. Although I do enjoy sitting with him and the fam at games, especially when he's in one of his moods.
~MacGregor Sharp. I practically hyperventilated the other day realizing he'd no longer be on the ice for the 'Dogs.
~The road trippin' dads. Two dads had kids graduate. But... maybe they'll still come on the road?
~Inebriated Mike. One of my favorite people with whom to attend a game. Now who am I going to clutch in panic when games get stressful?
~Being Christine's stats slut, though I know she's still going to come to games.
~The incredible senior leadership we were so fortunate to have.
Lastly, in case you rely solely on RWD for your UMD Bulldog Hockey news (which is inadvisable), here's the fresh meat for 2009-2010:
F Mike Seidel
F Dan Delisle
F Keegan Flaherty
F Jake Hendrickson
